  9. This is the freeware version of Eudora for Windows. There is also a
  10. commercial version of Eudora called Eudora Pro (Version 2.0 and
  11. above).  If you would like information about the commercial version, a
  12. brief description is provided in the Help menu of this freeware.  Select
  13. About Eudora Pro to display this dialog. You can also subscribe to
  14. the QUALCOMM Enterprise Software Technologies (QUEST) mailing list by
  15. selecting QUEST News from the Help menu.  This list will provide
  16. subscribers with occasional information about Eudora, Eudora Pro,
  17. and other QUEST products.

  19. The latest version of Eudora Light can be found on ftp.qualcomm.com, in the
  20. directory quest/windows/eudora/1.5.  The Windows freeware user manual can also
  21. be found on ftp.qualcomm.com, in the directory
  22. quest/windows/eudora/documentation.  The user manual is formatted in Word for
  23. Windows version 2.0 format.

  25. Both the freeware and its documentation can also be retrieved via e-mail
  26. using QUALCOMM's list server. To obtain the freeware, send a message to
  27. majordomo@qualcomm.com with the body text as follows:

  31. Alternatively, if you want the file delivered in uuencode format rather
  32. than BinHex, use the following message:

  51. Minimum Requirements
  52. --------------------

  54. Eudora Light requires the following:
  55.  
  56.     - IBM PC compatible machine
  57.     - MS Windows Version 3.1
  58.     - WinSock v1.1 compliant TCP/IP stack
  59.     - Microsoft (or compatible) mouse (highly recommended)
  60.     - At least 750KB of free disk space (more depending on mailbox sizes)

  64. Installation

  67. Install Eudora as follows:
  68.  
  69. 1.  Create a new directory on your PC for the Eudora files
  70.     (C:\EUDORA is a good choice).
  71.  
  72. 2.  Copy the Eudora Light executable file (EUDORA.EXE) into the
  73.     directory you created in step 1.
  74.  
  75. 3.  Add the following environment variable to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
  76.  
  77.            SET TMP=C:\TMP                 (or some temp directory)
  78.  
  79.            Make sure that this directory exists.
  80.  
  81. 4.  Run Windows and add Eudora as a Program Item to a new or existing
  82.     Program Group.
  83.  
  84. If you wish your mail files to reside somewhere other than where the
  85. executable resides, then you can set the mail directory by specifying the
  86. directory as the first parameter on the command line of the Program Item
  87. that you create for Eudora.
  88.  
  89. This is also useful if you want to have multiple users on one PC, each with
  90. their own mail directory.  Eudora will use the directory on the command
  91. line first.  If that isn't present, the directory where the executable
  92. resides will be used.

  94. Note:   Always keep the Help file in the same directory as the executable.

  98. Configuration
  99. -------------

  101. The first time you run Eudora you will have to edit some of the
  102. configuration information in order to be able to send and receive mail.
  103.  
  104. Select Settings... from the Special Menu.
  105.  
  106. The fields you need to review are:
  107.  
  108. POP Account:  To use Eudora, you must have an account on a computer that
  109. runs a POP3 server.  This is the account to which your e-mail messages are
  110. delivered before they are transferred to the Eudora program on your PC.  In
  111. this field, type your login name for this account and the full (domain)
  112. name of the computer, separating them with an "@" sign.  For example, if
  113. your assigned login name is "carolyn," and the name of the computer where
  114. you receive e-mail is "uxh.cso.uiuc.edu," type "carolyn@uxh.cso.uiuc.edu"
  115. in this field.
  116.  
  117. Real Name:  Type your real name.  Your name, as it appears here, is
  118. displayed in parentheses after your return address in your outgoing mail.
  119. It is also displayed in the sender column of all messages you send.
  120.  
  121. SMTP Server:  To send mail, a computer with an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer
  122. Protocol) server program is necessary.  You need not have a login to this
  123. computer, but you must have access to it through your network.  If the
  124. computer on which you have your POP account is also an SMTP server, leave
  125. this field blank.  Otherwise, specify the name of the computer you want to
  126. use as your SMTP server.

  128. Return Address:  Normally, Eudora uses your POP account as your return
  129. address.  If you wish to use a return address other than your POP account,
  130. enter it here.

  133. If you have the New Mail Notification "Sound" switch on, then when new mail
  134. arrives, you will hear a notification sound.  In order for this to work,
  135. your system must have a properly configured sound board, or you must have
  136. installed the Sound Driver for PC-Speaker (anonymous ftp from
  137. ftp.qualcomm.com the file /quest/windows/utils/SPEAK.EXE).  Eudora has a
  138. built-in sound, but if you wish to supply your own, it must be in .WAV
  139. format.  To change the default new mail sound, select the Settings... menu
  140. item in the Special menu, and then select the Getting Attention category.
  141. Select the button under the "Play a sound" checkbox, and a dialog will
  142. prompt you for the sound file.
  143.  
  144. Note that this driver will only work for the Windows 3.X operating system.
  145. It will not work for Windows NT or Windows 95.

  148. If the mail you are sending is bouncing back to you saying that the message
  149. does not have a Date: header, add the following entry to your EUDORA.INI
  150. file:
  151.

  155. where xxx, yyy are timezone abbreviations like PST, PDT, CDT, and nnn is
  156. the offset in hours WEST of GMT (i.e., those that are east of GMT should
  157. enter a negative number here).  xxx is the timezone during Standard Time
  158. and yyy is the timezone during Daylight Savings Time.  If you do not change
  159. your clocks during Daylight Savings Time, leave yyy blank.
  160. Here's some samples:

  165. If you don't specify a TimeZone entry, then a Date: header will not be put
  166. in outgoing messages, which is fine for most users because their mail
  167. server will insert the correct Date: header.  The moral is - if you don't
  168. get messages bounced because of a missing Date: header, then leave the
  169. TimeZone entry alone.

  173. TCP/IP Services
  174. ---------------

  176. Eudora makes use of several different TCP/IP services, and has default port
  177. numbers for these services.  Most sites put these services on the default
  178. ports, but some may not.  Contact your site network administrator to make
  179. sure that the following services listed below are indeed on the default
  180. port numbers.  If they aren't, you'll have to make some changes to some
  181. configuration file(s) in your TCP/IP package (usually to a SERVICES file).
  182.  
  183. Below are a list of the services which Eudora uses, and what they might
  184. look like in a typical services file.  The names of these services must be
  185. exactly as named here (e.g., the entry for the POP3 service must be "pop3"
  186. and not "pop-3").  Make sure that you make any changes necessary for your
  187. TCP/IP package to specify the location of the SERVICES file.

  189. To send mail:
  190.         smtp      25/tcp

  192. To receive mail:
  193.         pop3      110/tcp

  195. To use Ph (if your site has a Ph server):
  196.         csnet-ns  105/tcp

  198. To use Finger (if your site supports finger):

  201. To use the Change Password... function in Eudora, your site must have a
  202. password changing server installed.  See the directory
  203. quest/unix/servers/password on ftp.qualcomm.com for examples of password
  204. changing servers):

  207. There are also entries in the [Settings] section of the EUDORA.INI
  208. file for default port numbers of services.  These are provided for setups
  209. in which the SERVICES file cannot be modified.  Do not use these entries
  210. unless the services are not on default port numbers and you cannot modify
  211. them in your TCP/IP package.  Here are sample INI entries:

  227. you can subscribe to a mailing list called windows-eudora-forum that has been
  228. established to allow Eudora users to communicate with one another, answer
  229. questions, and exchange ideas about Eudora.

  232. Special menu.  You may also unsubscribe from the mailing list this way.

  234. Once you are subscribed, you can send a message to all other subscribers on

  239. Participation in this list is purely voluntary. Since it is an
  240. "unmoderated" mailing list, any message sent to

  247. Bug Reports

  250. If you experience something you think might be a bug in Eudora, please
  251. report it by sending a message to pc-eudora-bugs@qualcomm.com.  Describe what
  252. you did, what happened, what version of Eudora you have, any error messages
  253. Eudora gave (the numbers in ()'s are especially important), what kind of
  254. computer you have, what operating system you're using, and anything else you
  255. think might be relevant.

  257. You will receive an automated response indicating that your bug report has
  258. been received and forwarded to our enigineering staff.  Unless additional
  259. information is needed, you will not receive a direct response.
  260.  
  261. There's an application called Dr. Watson in your Windows directory
  262. (DRWATSON.EXE) that will write some important debugging information to a
  263. log file (DRWATSON.LOG, also in the Windows directory) and also prompt you
  264. to jot down a few words about what you were doing whenever a crash occurs.
  265. This information is extremely helpful for tracking down PC problems.  It is
  266. recommended that you run Dr. Watson whenever you're running Windows.  That
  267. way, if you should have a GPF when using Eudora, you can include the Dr.
  268. Watson log file with your bug report (Win32 users, be sure to send a Win16
  269. Dr. Watson log, not a Win32 one).

  271. The entries are appended to the end of the log file, so it can grow very
  272. large.  Periodically delete the file to keep its size to a minimum. When you
  273. include a log file as part of a bug report, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, edit
  274. the log file so that only the pertinent part(s) are included.

  309. good choice, as I like to see all the interesting places that Eudora is
  310. being used.  Humorous or unusual postcards are a favorite of mine, and you
  311. never know when I may decide that someone's postcard was interesting enough
  312. to make them a tester for the commercial version of Eudora.
